The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MoICT) has reiterated its commitment to accelerating Malawi’s digital transformation agenda of the Malawi 2063 through the ongoing Digital Malawi Acceleration Project (DMAP).
DMAP, which succeeded the Digital Malawi Program: Digital Foundations Project, is being implemented by the Ministry in collaboration with the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC), with support from the World Bank. The project seeks to expand connectivity, improve service delivery, and promote digital inclusion across the country.

Speaking at the 2025 ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) Annual General Meeting, Innovation Awards, and Trainings in Mangochi, Senior Deputy Director for the Department of eGovernment in the Ministry, Ackim Sanuka, highlighted the transformative impact of the project on government operations.
He noted that DMAP has enhanced the Government Wide Area Network by providing high-speed internet connectivity to over 530 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
“A total of 4,000 kilometers of high-speed fiber optic cable has been laid across the country, connecting different sites. This builds upon the existing government-wide area network to extend access to as many areas as possible,” said Sanuka.
He further explained that DMAP continues to support the newly established National Data Centre in Lilongwe by improving data hosting capabilities and facilitating a shift toward cloud computing.
Sanuka explained: “We have begun migrating government systems to the new data centre. Our goal is to host all public services there.”
On next-generation digital identification, Sanuka added: “We intend to introduce flexible digital ID options, allowing citizens to choose between a mobile ID and a physical ID. This will address the challenge of carrying physical documents everywhere.”
He concluded by emphasizing the project’s role in advancing digital skills and entrepreneurship among women, youth, and the elderly, to ensure no one is left behind in the digital era.
In his welcome remarks, ICTAM President Clarence Gama echoed the call for inclusive digital development, saying that inclusion is central to national progress.
“We made our position clear that we would like to drive inclusion, not just for women and youth, but we want to drive inclusion for the underprivileged in the rural areas as well,” said Gama.
ICTAM General Manager Andrew Kamwendo expressed gratitude to PPPC and all partners for sponsoring and actively participating in this year’s Annual General Meeting.
